The greatest heavyweight boxer of all time was a Black man named Muhammed Ali.  He was not the biggest fighter out there. In fact, he was normal sized and usually the “underdog”.  But he became the champion!

How?

Because he knew bigger boxers underestimated him and though he was not aggressive and weak and small. He made sure they knew he was not weak and would fight aggressively and this led the other boxers to respect him.

This is the same attitude these rich landlords have against us hard working tenants. They think we are weak.  It’s why we all need to fight aggressively and teach them to respect us…and if the don’t they will get knocked out!

Most landlords think they are clever and tenants are stupid and weak and not capable of fighting back.

Why do landlords think they are so clever?

Many bought their rental properties thanks to  mortgage fraud with fake incomes. The mortgage business is very shady and how did some lowly person end up with several rental properties? Hmmm.

And then they avoided all the laws to create a likely illegal rental as cheaply as possible. A rental that is a fire trap that could lead to the deaths of you and your family.

Tenants Need To Show You Won’t Be Pushed Around Or Cheated On Day 1!

Mohamed Ali knew other fighters thought he was small and old.  He knew the key to his winning (and dominating) was to show the bigger, younger fighter he knew what he was doing and he was fierce and wouldn’t back down!

Ali knew that if he he looked ‘weak’ or ‘intimidated’ it would lead to even more attacks from his opponents.

So he made sure from the first second of the fight to teach his opponent/landlord a lesson

…He showed them he was going to fight harder than they were and he was going to KNOCK THEM OUT!

If You Are Rejected From Renting a Property You Want To Make Your Home

It’s clear that many landlords refuse tenant applicants by breaking the Ontario Human Rights Commission Laws.

The refuse you because you are on government assistance.  They refuse you because your income isn’t high enough. They refuse you because of your race or citizenship.  They refuse you because of your family.

This is all illegal…and it’s all super common!

Landlords are breaking the law by illegally denying you the home you deserve!

Always demand an exact reason why you were refused.  Record all conversations.

File a Human Rights Complaint against the landlord who refused you. Teach them a lesson they will never forget and make sure their law-breaking will end!

I know tenants are want to focus our time on our jobs, our studies and our families, but the landlords in Ontario are often PREDATORS and you have to take these steps to protect yourself, especially newcomers to Canada, people on government assistance, single mothers and students.

How To Do Take Action After Moving In? (No Need To Tell Your Landlord At All!)

-First, inspect the property yourself.  If you see any potential issues call your local by-law officer or Toronto 311 and get someone to come and inspect it.

Even if you don’t see any maintenance issues, call your local by-law officer or Toronto 311 (since you are not an expert and you want to make sure your new home is safe).

-Second, call you local Fire Department and ask for them to inspect your rental to make sure it is safe for you and your family.

-Third, if there are any issues at all file against your landlord at the Landlord and Tenant Board.

-Fourth, if there are any issues call the ….against your landlord and they will investigate

-Fifth, if you have any issues or questions, call your landlord and if they don’t answer quickly file a at the Landlord and Tenant Board

What Can I Do If My Landlord Threatens or Harasses Me?

-You can call the police.

-You can call the Investigation Unit

-You an file at the Landlord and Tenant Board

-Call your local By-law office or 311

-Go to your local Legal Aid Clinic or go to an LTB Hearing and talk to “Tenant Duty Counsel”

Even after you beat down your landlord you don’t need to move out! Your landlord will FEAR YOU, and you are the WINNER! Ali Style!

2. Demand action
3. Don’t be polite

…Show them you are smart and will not accept any ‘bad landlord’ games!

Ontario Landlords Association Is All About Helping Good Landlords, Good Tenants & Improving The Ontario Rental Industry – Spread The News About This Helpful Program For Tenants and Landlords

Small landlords are different than large corporate landlords in many ways.  In fact, we’ve told the Ministry of Housing that we should have different rules for small landlords versus large corporate landlords.

Many small residential landlords were once tenants ourselves. Whether it was while we were studying in college or university, when we moved out to find our first job, or when we started families and were saving up for a deposit to buy our own homes.

As people who rented ourselves, we know what tenants are looking for in finding a good rental home and a great landlord. We also know how “life happens” and no matter who you are circumstances can come up leading to job losses, illnesses, family struggles and not being able to pay rent.

Ontario Landlords Association Partners With Neighbourhood Informational Post (NIP) And Promotes The Toronto Rent Bank

The Ontario Landlords Association is happy to partner with NIP.  NIP is a non-for-profit organization funded by the government to support and help develop the local community, and  hold multiple programs that supports the individuals and households with low income.

One of the programs offered by NIP is the Toronto Rent Bank.

Toronto Rent Bank is an interest free loan that helps individuals and or household with low income to pay their rent and avoid eviction due to short-term financial difficulties.

NIP found that the demand for this program is raising over the years, however, the application we receive has been decreasing.

They assume this to be related to the limited number of people they are currently exposed to, therefore they want to seek if related organizations are willing to support them and expand this service to support more people.

More About NIP And the Toronto Rent Bank

In 1969, a group of community residents founded Neighbourhood Information Post because they wanted to ensure that low-income individuals and households had access to information and resources, so that they could be empowered to improve the quality of their own lives.

Four decades later, from helping local community members and newcomers access resources, supporting the development of community leaders and volunteers, to providing financial assistance and housing support to people throughout the City of Toronto, NIP remains a vital agency in the eastern downtown core in Toronto.

TORONTO RENT BANK PROGRAM

The Toronto Rent Bank Program provides interest-free repayable loans to low-income households facing eviction due to short-term financial difficulties.  It is a successful collaboration between Neighbourhood Information Post (NIP) and our partner agencies:  Albion Neighbourhood ServicesCOSTI North York Housing HelpEast York Housing Help, The Housing Help Centre, The Neighbourhood Organization, Unison Health and Community Services.

NIP acts as the Central Administrative agency as well as a local service access centre in this city-wide homelessness prevention program.  NIP is responsible for processing all Rent Bank loans and repayments in Toronto, as well as providing local residents in the Downtown area with Rent Bank intake functions and a variety of housing-related services.

Tenants may be eligible if:

  • you are living in Toronto with legal status in Canada

  • you have steady and ongoing source of income (within low-income guidelines)

  • you currently receive income through social assistance (OW / ODSP) or OSAP plus additional income; special rules apply* (*Please contact your local office for more information)

  • your rental unit is covered by provincial tenant legislation (RTA) and you are paying market rent

  • you can provide documentation required by the Rent Bank application process and satisfy all other program requirements

Landlords Can Benefit From This Program Too!

No small landlord wants to evict a good tenant who is having temporary financial troubles.  The problem is most small landlords are also struggling!

We need rent or we can’t cover our mortgage and won’t be able to continue to be a landlord. We aren’t huge corporate landlords with economies of scale and private legal teams.

Landlords can let our tenants know about the Rent Bank Program and help them succeed to help you succeed.

Let’s Make Sure Every Landlord In Ontario Follows The Human Rights Code And Doesn’t Discriminate

Many Ontario landlords were surprised to read a story in the Toronto Star about a tenant applicant who was being discriminated against.

This was an applicant most experienced and successful landlords would consider to potentially be an ideal tenant…someone we all want to rent from us.

She had a strong financial history (with good credit and a good job). She was established with good references.

However, she found herself being regularly refused by landlords because, she believes, strictly due to her race.

It was not only surprising but also shocking because our members are aware of the Human Rights Code and follow it.

Ontario Landlords Association Defends Small Landlords

A member of the Ontario Landlords Association was in the Toronto Star story defending all the good landlords out there. The member explained:  

“We educate our members on the laws and rules in Ontario.  We also educate landlords on what ‘really matters’ when screening (such as a credit and reference check, conversations with the tenants, etc.)”

“We teach you should never turn away a qualified tenant applicant because of their race, place of birth or beliefs.”

In our Ontario landlord forum one landlord commented on the Star story:

“You would have to be nuts to not rent to qualified applicants no matter where they are from or what they look like. These must be very inexperienced landlords and they won’t last.”

Another member said – “This makes us all look bad! I’m angry at these landlords! Learn the law!”

Our province-wide landlord community wants to fix the system to help good landlords, good tenants and increase the rental supply in Ontario.

This is the reason our province-wide community organization started over a decade ago…to improve the rental industry for both good landlords and good tenants.

Tenant: I Called The By-Law Department Directly And They Ordered My Landlord To Fix Things…Or Get A Huge Fine!

You Can Make Sure You Get Fast Repairs By Just Calling Your Local By-Laws Department Directly And Reporting Your Landlord

Sorry I’m not a professional writer or anything but people here encouraged me to share my story to help other tenants. There have been lots of great tenant posts that have helped others like How Ontario Tenants Can Easily Break a Lease, so I’ll try.

Second, this has nothing to do with all the good landlords out there who care about their tenants and make sure their rentals are safe.  This is just about the bad landlords.

I’m a single mum renting a place. As a single mum having a clean and safe property is a priority for me. So when I saw black mold in the bathroom I needed to act to protect my kids!

I called the landlord on Saturday night and texted 5 times and got no reply!

Even by Tuesday no reply, that’s 4 days of potentially poisoning my child!

I went to the Ontario tenants forum and asked others what to do and they said call the by-laws department directly and there is no need to even talk to your landlord because every city and town has laws for maintaining safe houses and tenants can call by-laws directly.

Landlords must follow the law!

By-Law Officer Was Professional And On My Side!

The by-laws officer came the next day and I asked her to do a huge, complete inspection of the rental house to protect me and my kids and she agreed.  She saw the black mold.

But it didn’t end there, as the Officer inspected the entire rental property! 

I was so happy to have help and protection for me and my family! She also found a lot of other issues (wiring, insulation) and even found the shingles were not up to code!

The by-laws officer said she would send a letter to the landlord demanding things get fixed or the landlord would be fined thousands of dollars. The landlord was also given a firm date to do the repairs, so they couldn’t “play games.”

A week later the landlord contacted me and gave me a schedule for lots of contractors to come to fix the mold and all the other issues.

I said “NO! You need to follow MY SCHEDULE or I will call the By-Law Officer again!” 

My landlord agreed fast, because he was worried that I was a smart tenant who knows my rights and he can’t treat me like crap or I will call the by-laws department again!

Tenants if you have any problems don’t even waste your time to call your landlord.  They are cheap and stingy and don’t care about you and your children at all!

Don’t waste time…call the by-laws department directly and they will come, you let them in, and you show them all the potential problems.

Then, the fight is between by-laws and your landlord, not you and your landlord.

And landlords get scared when the government is involved and will respect you and fear you for know how to protect your rights! They also know if they get fined the government will collect it.

Tenants Can Call By-Laws Directly And They Will Force Your Landlord To Make Repairs Or Get Charged Thousands of Dollars

Good landlords who take care of their rental properties don’t need to worry. But if you have a bad landlord you can call by-laws directly and make your landlord scared and obey your every command!

How Can You Contact Your Local By-Laws Department? 

Just call your city or town. And ask the receptionist to put you through to “the by-law department”.  It’s easy and they are excellent!

“Ontario Tenants Will Soon Be Able To Smoke Marijuana In Their Homes And There’s Nothing Landlords Can Do About It”

The uproar from landlords and their friends in the media regarding marijuana is both frustrating and frightening. While landlords are allowed to frame the debate regarding the non-existent “tenants smoking marijuana issue” there has been a great racist and class discriminating wall preventing tenants from sharing our opinions and experiences.

Hey Media! I am aware landlords spend millions of dollars in advertising dollars to the media, but couldn’t you even give tenants a few iotas of your precious ad space, I mean news stories.

It’s clear the landlords in Ontario, both big and small, have spent a lot of time and money working together to create a plan to try to prevent tenants in Ontario from using marijuana in our homes.

I can just imagine all the secretive meetings between all the landlord lobby groups at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto to prepare a “united front” against tenants. While sipping $100 bottle Bordeaux at the Cafe Boulud they talk about how tough life is being a landlord. 

And “oh how dare the working class enjoy smoking cannabis now that it will soon be legal” they sigh while downing dishes the average worker could never afford!

It seems they only want wealthy homeowners to be allowed to enjoy a toke of a nice strain due to their wealth and privileged position in society.

Tenants Have the Human Rights To Do The Same Things in Their Homes That Homeowners Do In Theirs

Homeowners need to realize that when you rent to a tenant in Ontario it is no longer “your property”. It is now the tenant’s home. And just like you tenants can do what they want in their home. 

So just like you in your home, tenants in our home can do things like:

-play scrabble

-watch Netflix

-cook really tasty popcorn to eat while we watch our favorite shows

-play with our pets

-have passionate sex with whomever we choose to do so

-pray to our gods and goddesses without discrimination or fear

-smoke marijuana and grow our own plants with sweet as hell strains that the LCBO chains will never match

It almost seems landlords think a tenant should pay the rent and yet never even live in the property.

Ideal Tenant – Never Home!

I often think the ideal tenant for Ontario landlords is a flight attendant.

He rents from you and is never home as he flies across the country earning a wage to pay rent.  Oh and if he ever brings his boyfriend back the landlord will be livid and preparing evictions notices.

Or suddenly things don’t get fixed.  Or there are constant needless repairs. Constant harassment to move. (Probably because both Mr. and Mrs. Landlord are jealous of what they are missing). Unless the hook up is short and the tenant leaves again and seems to just disappear while the rent money keeps flowing in like a river.

Too many landlords view their rental apartments as only a money making machine and not a place where real people live.  I will soon submit my next article on rentals with no parking, ha ha!

The Whole “Oh Marijuana Smells So Bad” is a Straw man Argument and Not Logical   

Does curry smell bad? No, I get hungry when I smell it because it was part of my family’s regular food supply. Does marijuana smell bad? For me, no not at all. I can barely even smell it and if I do notice it I’m reminded of my family garden as a child.

Smell is subjective and based on the life experiences of the person smelling. Some people don’t like the small of curry and “Indian food” or garlic and “Chinese food”.

It’s like asking 10 people “What do you think of this perfume?” Some will love it, some will like it, some will dislike it and some will hate it.  Everyone has a different opinion and it’s the same with the smell of marijuana (if there really is a smell, because I usually don’t even notice it).

What would I like to ban? 

Fat slobs who over cook animal flesh.  I don’t like the smell of burnt meat. It reminds me of how much the cow must have screamed while being slaughtered.

But since meat is typical “landlord” food there’s nothing I can do about it. Stop eating meat! And notice they advertise this as “hungry-MAN.”  That says a lot. Another reason to never rent from male landlords.

Tenants Can Smoke Marijuana And There Is Nothing Landlords Can Do About It

I have felt so threatened and angry over the past few weeks. Maybe I need to give up social media. 

The good news is tenants can smoke marijuana and grow plants in our homes and there is nothing landlords can do about it. It is reassuring to know that tenants have the same rights as homeowners and that means tenants are protected from landlords who only want to enjoy the benefits of marijuana to themselves and their land owning class.

And don’t think any “no smoking clause” will work for you because the tenant can just say she wasn’t smoking and it was the smell on her clothes or something. You won’t get your eviction!

I want to create some balance here so landlords repeat after me:

What the Tenants Are Doing In Their Homes Is Our Business And If We Are Smoking Marijuana and Growing Some Plants There Is Nothing You Can Do About It. 

Marijuana is not only for the wealthiest in our society and not only for the homeowner class.
