I Paid My LL Full Rent (Because I Don’t Want To Move!)

Tuesday, August 25th, 2020

I wanted to send this in and hope it gets published because hopefully it will provide a different perspective on the rental crisis we are all facing.

My landlords are a working couple who live very close to where my place is. They are very nice and we get along well. The property is in a nice area and my kids go to the local schools (which are excellent and my kids love it).

We are near parks and good shopping and my rent is affordable

Lots Of People Are Telling Me “You Don’t Have To Pay Rent

Last March my email box was full of my friends who rent saying we didn’t need to pay rent and would not have to worry about being evicted.

It’s sounded too good to be true…and I’m always worried when things sound like this.

I looked into it more and it was really confusing because Premier Ford said it and lots of groups like “don’t pay rent” were telling renters not to pay.

I Called My Landlords

When this all came out I called my landlords and discussed this with them. They told me if people don’t pay rent, they will end up paying just later on.

They also told me they depend on my rent to keep the property going.

They are heavily mortgaged, pay tons of taxes and didn’t raise the rent on me because they want to keep me renting from them.

If They Don’t Get Rent They Will Have To Sell

They told me that honestly they aren’t making any money from owning the property as unlike in downtown Toronto house prices are not increasing where we live and taxes and fees keep going up.

They said frankly if I don’t pay they would have to sell the house.

Sell The House…My Home…Where My Kids Are Growing Up In?

I know they were sincere and honest and finally saw things through their “eyes”.

They are working class people like me and I can see how they bought the property hoping it will help them in their retirement but they will only make “big money” if houses appreciate (which I doubt they ever will here.)

Love The House, And It’s Our Home…So Let’s Pay Rent

Knowing the facts of the matter I paid rent throughout and will pay in full again in September. I’m back to work and things are getting better.

We pay affordable rent and love the place and my landlords are cool and I have a better relationship than ever…And they promised never to sell the house if I want to stay!

Don’t Pay Rent For 1 Or 2 Years…And How You Can Avoid Being Evicted Later On!

Disclaimer: “This isn’t an attack on landlords. This is an attack on the system that got us here.”

Don’t Pay Rent And How You Can Avoid Future Eviction!

We hear so many media stories of why working class tenants who are suffering in this deadly pandemic “must” pay rent.

We hear paying rent instead of saving money for food and emergencies is “the right thing to do”.  It’s a morality test.

And while we are laid off from work and worried about our future we should “care about the landlords who need to pay their mortgage more than our not dying!”

It’s really makes me gag and want to throw up.

Landlord – Tenant Matters Are A Business Negotiation Of Equals

Landlords are running a business, yet they expect pay from their client (their Tenant) to instantly appear like the 11th Commandment is “You Must Pay Rent and Enrich Your Landlord.”

The federal and provincial governments have made it clear Tenants should not make paying rent a priority.

In Ontario the Landlord and Tenant Board is closed so if you don’t pay rent there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING YOUR LANDLORD CAN LEGALLY DO.

So I Don’t Have To Pay May Rent and It’s Okay?

Yes!  It’s not only okay, it’s the right thing to do. Even Premier Ford said this and with the Landlord and Tenant Board closed you cannot be evicted for any reason! You can enjoy life and survive in this challenging era.

My sucker Tenant agreed to move out, now I can raise the rent 100%! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Landlord Tricks – LL Is Offering Me 3 Months Of Rent If I Sign An N11 And Move

We hear so many media stories of why working class tenants who are suffering in this deadly pandemic “must” pay rent.

Here is a common dirty tactic.  Don’t sign the N11. If you move where will you find another apartment at similar rents?  And if you move you will need to pay “first and last” but if you stay in your current apartment you don’t need to pay rent for months!

Tenants Cannot Be Evicted

You do not need to pay rent. Premier Doug Ford said that. So don’t be an idiot and pay rent on May 1st.  As Doug Ford said, use that money for more important things.

Tenants Cannot Be Evicted And What This Means

Use this opportunity to protect yourself and use your money not on paying rent to parasitic landlords.

Don’t feel sorry for your landlord because they cry for help but have multiple properties and just want to make even more profits off our backs in this horrible economy.

How Long Can I Not Pay Rent?

For now it’s at least April but we predict it will me much longer.  Perhaps six months, or a year or even longer. We might even be able to be rent free for 18-36 months! Yes, that’s 3 years of savings for food and education.

What If My Landlord Tells Me To “Pay Up Or Leave?”

That’s illegal.  You can call the police.  The only legal way to evict a Tenant is via the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) and that isn’t working.

If you feel threatened CALL THE POLICE ASAP!  The boys in blue are very sympathetic to Tenant victims and will help you and even get your landlord criminal charged.

So What Happens When The LTB Gets Open Again?

Even before this crisis landlords had to wait 6-10 months to get a Hearing.  With the huge backlog it will be at least a year to get any type of Hearing when the virus pandemic ends.

So That Means I Don’t Have To Pay Rent For 1+ Years?

Yes, and this a good thing. Your landlord is already rich and you need to worry about YOU and YOUR FAMILY.

Your landlord is probably living their million dollar bunker anyway.

If I Owe Year Or More Of Rent And Don’t Pay What Happens?

Don’t worry.

The Board can cancel all your rent debt if YOU HAVE A GOOD STORY SHOWING YOU TRIED BUT NEEDED TO PAY FOR FOOD OVER RENT.

-GET CONCRETE (written, video recording) EVIDENCE  YOU TRIED TO WORK WITH YOUR LANDLORD AND YOUR DEBTS WILL BE VANISHED BY THE LANDLORD AND TENANT BOARD

-IT’S EVEN BETTER IF YOU PAY A LITTLE BIT, AS THEY CAN HELP YOUR CASE…”SEE I PAID WHAT I COULD YOUR HONOUR!”

IF YOU EXPLAIN YOU DIDN’T PAY (OR DIDN’T PAY FULL RENT) WAS DUE TO THE COVID-19 CRISIS…YOU WILL GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE ON A “PAYMENT PLAN” INSTEAD OF EVICTION. EXPLAIN YOUR SUPER CHALLENGING ECONOMIC SITUATION AND YOU CAN END UP JUST PAYING $50 MORE A MONTH AND STAY IN YOUR HOME. REMEMBER TO SHOW PROOF OF YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, BILLS, TUITION, ETC.

Collecting debts in Canada is very difficult.  The only real trick landlords have is to garnish wages.  So never tell them where you work.

But if  they won $30,000 -$100,000 you can also just declare bankruptcy and the landlord will NEVER COLLECT YOUR BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS SAVINGS.

Lesson: By Not Paying Now You Are Saving Thousands Of Dollars.
