Landlord Licensing = Tenant Tax = Big Mistake! (part 3)
It has now been admitted that Landlord Licensing (apartment taxation) WILL increase rents. These increases will occur regularly and be buried in the tenants’ rents.
Landlord Licensing will NOT motivate irresponsible Landlords to repair their properties.
Landlord Licensing will NOT provide a benefit to tenants. Tenants living in poorly maintained apartments already have ample effective means to report and force severe financial and legal penalties on their Landlords. Most tenants live in properly maintained apartments and therefore have no maintenance issues anyway, but they will still be required to pay the Landlord Licensing fee (Apartment Tax).
Consider these as the REAL reasons city politicians and those claiming to be “advocates” for tenants are pushing for this new tax:
For politicians, it’s a perfect tax. It’s “hidden” because it’s buried in the rent. It can and will be increased yearly because the politicians don’t have to accept any responsibility for it as it as tenants won’t even realize they are paying it. Politicians know that many tenants do not bother to vote, therefore even if the tax is discovered there is little danger of the politicians being voted out.
For Tenant “Advocate” groups, it’s also a perfect tax. They are promoting this tax (“Landlord License”) under the false premise that it will benefit tenants. The reality is these “Advocate” groups have already publicly stated they want part of this annual tax for their own pockets. D Former FMTA director says that $24.00 annually per apartment would be a good start. This will cost Toronto tenants millions of additional dollars per year!
More taxes on Toronto Tenants are unfair. They already pay almost three times the tax rate of wealthier Toronto Homeowners.
The stakes are HUGE. No wonder City politicians and Tenant “Advocate” groups are practically salivating over this new Apartment Tax; it’s a fantastic, never ending source of income for them!
