Hamilton woman charged in Barton Street apartment scam

A Hamilton woman who police say posed as a landlord and took rent money for an apartment that wasn’t hers has been charged.

On November 1, a 25-year-old man answered an online ad for an apartment rental on Barton Street East.

He met with a woman acting as a property manager and handed over money for the first three months rent.

He returned later that night but could not get into the apartment with the keys she gave him.

A second woman also responded to the ad. The 29-year-old wasn’t able to see the apartment that day but also paid an undisclosed amount for the place.

When the man learned the apartment was not actually for rent on Nov. 3, he called police.

Officers arrested the woman at her home in Hamilton on Nov. 7 at 8:30 p.m.

The 20-year-old is charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000.

yes, there are all kinds of scams.

This one is not a landlord scam, but one where a person poses as a landlord.

Not one tenant has asked me for proof of id, proof of owning the property for rent (mortgage papers/property taxes etc.).

I would not be offended if they did ask.

All landlords should do this. It should be the law!

Sure, I wouldn't object if it was the law that I provide proof of ownership, no problem!

Conversely then it should be the law that prospective tenant provide SIN and drivers licence or health card.

That way both tenant and landlord have an extra layer or protection.
